The Rice Millers Association of Nigeria (RIMAN) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for ordering the closure of land borders in order to check importation of rice.
Peter Dama, Chairman of the association, said the border closure is in the interest of the country, saying the decision would improve the economy, create jobs and encourage local producers.
He said since the closure, moribund millers have sprung back to life, creating jobs and supplying Nigerians with fresh rice as against foreign rice that has been stored in silos for years.
Dama encouraged the Federal Government to only reopen the borders when there are diplomatic solutions to rice smuggling in the country. He urged the government to monitor illegal routes being exploited by unrepentant smugglers. He however commended the security operatives for manning the borders religiously.
He urged Nigerians to patronise local rice farmers. He commended Senator Adamu Aliero and eight other senators who raised the motion for the closure of the borders.
