At least 19 people have died in an accident along the Kaduna-Abuja highway.

Samuel Aruwan, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs in Kaduna State, said the accident occurred on Sunday night at the Kateri axis of the highway.
Aruwan explained that the crash was caused by overspeeding involved a trailer and a commercial bus.
He said the commercial bus suffered a tyre burst, causing it to lose control and veer into the bush.

The commissioner noted that a total of fifty-three (53) people were involved in the crash; 16 of which died on the spot, while three others were later confirmed dead.
According to him, thirty-four others who sustained injuries of various degrees were evacuated from the scene by personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

It was said that most of the passengers onboard the ill-fated trailer were picked up at Kara in Lagos, with some of them expected to alight in Zaria, while Kano was meant to be its final destination.
