Feranmi Fasunle, a 19-year-old student of the Adekunle Ajasin University in the Akungba Akoko area of Ondo State, has committed suicide.
It was learnt that Fasunle, a student of the Department of Political Science, reportedly consumed a poisonous chemical, which resulted in her death on Wednesday.
According to a source from the university community, the deceased took the poison in her room and started gasping for breath.
She was rushed to the University’s Health Centre from where she was referred to other hospitals but was confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Center, Owo.
Victor Akinpelumi, the spokesperson of the university, confirmed the development.
The university spokesperson sadness about the incident, noting that the reasons for her action remained unknown but sources said it might be connected to a failed relationship.
The father of the deceased, Adeolu Akande, the Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), in a statement on Thursday, said the family would reach out to the institution for investigation into the incident.
“It is on a very sad note that I announce the passage of our daughter, Miss Feranmi Fasunle, aged 19.
“The sad event took place today at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Ondo State.
“She was a promising 200-level student of Political Science at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State who dreamt of reading Law as a second degree,” Akande said in the statement sent to Premium Times.
It was learnt that the late student was actually Mr Akande’s adopted daughter who he raised from childhood.
