Two prominent socio-cultural organisations in the country, Afenifere and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, have again thrown their weight behind President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of next week’s presidential election.
Tajudeen Olusi, one of the leaders of Afenifere, and Uche Okwukwu, Secretary-General of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo World Wide, at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential rally on Saturday in Lagos said their groups will support President Buhari to victory in the February 16 presidential election.
During his speech, Olusi assured the President of the total support of the south-west body.
He said, “I am speaking on behalf of Afenifere, Mr President, you have our certificate, you have our testimonial. “Majority of members in the House of Representatives are Afenifere, I can assure you that they are behind you.”
In his own address, Okwukwu reassured Buhari, that the Igbos will ensure that he succeeded at the polls.
“I’m here to reassure you today. Yesterday, the leaders and representatives of the Ohaneze Ndigbo were at the Presidential Villa and assured you that you will get far more greater number of votes in Igboland,” he stated.
Okwukwu’s endorsement of Buhari, however, runs contrary to that of the Ime-Obi, the highest decision-making body Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which publicly endorsed Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the election.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, headed by Nnia Nwodo, recently suspended Okwukwu over his endorsement of President Buhari.
