A member of the aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains and former Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Bode George, has wished Atiku Abubakar good luck if in his opinion, he thinks he has what it takes to win the 2023 presidential election without the support of the disgruntled five governors, popularly known as G5.
Newsbreak.ng reports that the G5 and their allies have called for the removal of the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, citing regional balance in the party’s structure.
However, Ayu has insisted that he won’t step down till the end of his four-year tenure, even as the G5 made his resignation a precondition to support Atiku’s 2023 presidential ambition.
While George and his associates have not been seen campaigning for Atiku, it is not clear whether they will support Bola Tinubu (All Progressives Congress, APC) or Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the contest for Aso Rock’s top job.
“If Atiku thinks he can win without us, good luck to him. His aides who are speaking for him know nothing about the foundation on which the party stands,” George told Punch.
“We have stated our position but if Atiku thinks he knows better than us, it is good with him. We will make our position clear and work toward what we believe in. Atiku cannot threaten us because for someone like me, I am not looking for anything from him. What do I need now… A job or an appointment? I am already retired.
“We are not saying he cannot win without us but we wish him all the best. If he says we would be retired politically if he goes ahead to win without us, that is fine. I will go home.”
