The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reiterated that electorates without voters cards will not be allowed to vote at the 2023 general election.
Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the election umpire, reiterated the commission’s position during his speech on Wednesday, citing section 47 of the electoral statute and stating that the commission will not permit voters to cast ballots without a voter card.
“No PVC, No Voting! Sec 47(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 provides “A person intending to vote in an election shall present himself with his voter’s card to a Presiding Officer for accreditation at the PU in the constituency in which his name is registered,” Yakubu said.
His remarks come amid concerns over the commission’s ability to handle the demand for handing out voter registration cards to recently enrolled voters. Many Nigerians have persisted in urging the commission to permit voters to cast ballots without PVCs because the election will require biometric verification.
Many people think that PVC use at polling places should be gradually phased out using biometric verification.
