The presidential standard-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 election, Bola Tinubu, has reportedly invited a former governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, to a meeting on Wednesday in Abuja, the Nigerian capital city.
Newsbreak.ng learned that Tinubu is keen on wooing Shekarau to the ruling APC to aid his presidential ambition.
Recall that Shekarau, a two-term former governor of Kano State and current senator for Kano Central, defected from the APC to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) led by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, also a former governor of the state, in June this year with thousands of his supporters.
But this newspaper has scooped that the 66-year-old will most likely exit the NNPP soon as he feels there are many challenges within the party.
It was reliably gathered that Tinubu’s running-mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, had earlier met with Shekarau on August 8, but sources said “no agreement was reached”. Nonetheless, Shettima’s principal, Tinubu, is billed to meet with Shekarau later this week on the issue of defection.
Apart from advances from the APC, another major political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is also understandably said to be eyeing Shekarau.
Meanwhile, an effort to get a reaction from the Chairman of the NNPP in Kano State, Umar Haruna Doguwa, was not successful as of the time of publishing this report.
