As the 2023 election gathers steam, Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, says the plan of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party, to remove import restrictions “only favour traders like him”.
Newsbreak.ng recalls that Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, said on Wednesday at Harvard University, USA, that if elected president in 2023, his administration will eliminate restrictions around foreign exchange policy.
But Omokri has argued that that action “will completely destroy the textile industry in Kaduna and Kano, and manufacturing sectors in Ikeja, Lagos, and Agbara, Ogun State”.
Omokri posited that instead of importing “what we can produce”, Nigeria must be focused on production.
“Obi’s plan to remove import restrictions only favour traders, like him. But it will completely destroy the textile industry in Kaduna and Kano, and manufacturing sectors in Ikeja, Lagos, and Agbara, Ogun State.
“Nigeria must produce, not import what we can produce!” he wrote on his verified Twitter handle on Friday.
