As the 2023 election inches closer, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the March governorship election in Rivers state, Tonye Cole, has pleaded with Governor Nyesom Wike to stop trying to stifle campaigns of other political parties in the state.
NEWSBREAK reports that Cole was in Oyigbo on Monday where he engaged with the people.
During the engagement, Cole alleged that “some officials came to our rally venue to execute an executive order to shut down the rally venue”. The APC candidate said that the alleged enforcement caused panic as people ran helter-skelter.
He, therefore, condemned the “tactics of oppression” by the Wike-led administration.
He wrote on his verified social media pages with an accompanying video: “Today (Monday), we visited Oyigbo, and the people came out to freely exercise their right to support a political candidate of their choice, and boy did they come out in their numbers, but unfortunately, there was an incident.
“Panic set in, as people ran from some officials who came to our rally venue to execute an executive order to shut down the rally venue. During their flight from perceived danger, some were injured, but thankfully, there was no loss of life, and we were able to restore calm and continue our rally on the streets.
“Regardless of what happened today, we move #ForwardWithCourage. However, we must denounce these tactics of oppression. We have done nothing wrong, and neither have our innocent supporters.
“We deserve the freedom and safety to exercise our rights, and we call on the leadership of Rivers State to lift these executive orders barring us from using campaign venues.”
