As the 2023 election approaches, the Centre for Integrity and Good Governance (CIGG) has said Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State is wrong to query Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on his choice of Ifeanyi Okowa as running mate.
In a statement on Wednesday signed by its conveners, Waheed Aderibigbe and Obinna Ukariaku, obtained by Newsbreak, CIGG said Atiku followed the law.
“Atiku Abubakar has shown respect for the rule of law by following the provision of Section 142 (1) of the 1999 constitution as amended in choosing his running mate. He should be applauded for abiding by the law and making his choice as demanded by the constitution.
“The input or suggestion from any of the stakeholders in his party remains advisory, the onus to finally pick one person out of many rests on the candidate, not the party,” CIGG’s statement reads in part.
This news medium reports that in the wake of speculations that Governor Nyesom Wike may decamp to another party, Governor Ortom had asked Atiku to reach out to the River State Governor.
Ortom, who expressed worry that Atiku denied Wike the popular views of the PDP members, stated that he expected Atiku to have reached out to Wike on the grounds that he finished second in the PDP presidential primaries.
