A 25-year old Elijah Oyawumi has confessed how he often snatched phones and SIM cards to withdraw money from people’s bank accounts.
He was arrested by police detectives attached to Area G, Police Command, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos for snatching a Techno Pouvoiry 3 Plus phone belonging to Mr. Adegboyega Davies, which he later used to withdraw the sum of N30, 000 from the Polaris account of the man.
Oyewumi told Newsbreak that: “We are a three-man gang and we usually snatch people’s phone and sometimes buy SIM cards with which we used to withdraw their hard earned money from their accounts.
“I was not the one that snatched the phone of Mr Davies. The SIM card was given to me by a friend and I quickly used the necessary code to transfer N30k to a POS account before the owner of the account blocked it. I didn’t know he would block it on time. Anytime we transfer the money to POS account, we won’t go there again in order not to give room for our arrest.
“The only way the SIM card owner can prevent us from access it is to have a pin or password on the SIM, if not e have ways to gain entry into whatever is in the phone.”
The POS operator (name withheld) told our reporter that: “The police men through their findings got my POS account and phone number. They called me to inform me that they wanted to use their ATM card to withdraw some cash and I gave them the description of how they could locate my place. When they came, they asked me to produce the man that transferred and withdrew money from me, I told them that I didn’t know him.
“As luck would smile on me, the police were about taking me away when I sighted the boy and he was arrested.”
Newsbreak gathered that before the Investigative Police Officer charged the boy to Magistrate Court 19 in Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos, the suspect was forced to cough out the N30,000 allegedly withdrew from Mr. Davies’ account and gave him back, while also bought another phone for him..
