The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested the former Chairman of the Presidential Implementation Committee on Marine Safety, Air Vice Marshal Saliu Atawodi in connection with the ongoing probe into the alleged two billion dollars arms deal scam. He has been accused of collecting the sum of 600 million naira to acquire gunboats for the armed forces without delivering any. He was said to have awarded the contract and paid fully without ensuring the delivery. An EFCC source told Vanguard that the former Air Force personnel was arrested on Wednesday and will be charged with crimes bordering on conspiracy, abuse of public office and misappropriation of public funds. It also said the contract was awarded to one Hypertech Nigeria Limited and the process violated the Procurement Act.
Meanwhile, the spokesman of the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, said the former Presidential Implementation Committee chairman was invited to assist in the ongoing arms deal scam investigation.
