Iliyasu Suleiman, the Principal of Government Day Secondary School, Lere in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen has regained his freedom.
The 50-year-old Suleiman was freed after eight days in captivity on Saturday, a family source told journalists.
“Our brother has been released and has returned home. The family will meet later to discuss the development, definitely, at end of the meeting, we will get back to you,” the source said.
The family source thanked all those who played any role in the safe return of their brother from the den of the kidnappers.
It is not yet known if any ransom was paid, and if it was paid, how much was paid to secure the Principal’s release.
The family of the kidnapped Principal, in an SOS message made available to journalists earlier in the week, said the kidnappers demanded for N50 million as ransom.
Suleiman was attacked alongside the Auditor General of Bauchi State, Abdu Usman Aliyu, his (the AG’s) son, daughter and two others while on their way to Kardam in Tafawa Balewa LGA by gunmen, who had been trailing them.
The gunmen tried to kidnap the Auditor General but he resisted, forcing them to shoot him in his mouth at close range and wounded him in the process.
The gunmen, who thought the Auditor General was dead, left him at the incident scene and kidnapped his son and the principal, while the other occupants of the car escaped.
Zulkifiru, the 25-year-old son of the Auditor General, later escaped from captivity on Monday, leaving the Principal with the kidnappers. His father is still battling for his life at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital.
