Vetland Senior Grammar School, Agege, Lagos State, has emerged the overall winner of the Academic Excellence Initiatives (AEI’s) annual Scholars’ Day.
Newsbreak reports that the event, in its sixth year, is a quiz competition for all Lagos-based secondary schools.
A total of 73 schools had registered for free to compete, and after the first round, 30 educational institutions qualified to the next stage.
Following the second stage preliminary in April, 15 schools progressed to the finals which held on Saturday, May 14.
Champions, Vetland, went home with N300,000; the first runner-up, Dansol High School, received N200,000; while the second runner-up, Juli Comprehensive College, were rewarded with N150,000.
Speaking at the event, the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, who was represented by Awosanya Hussein, Director Basic Education Services; hailed the AEI Scholars’ Day as top quality.
“I sincerely appreciate AEI for this impactful project, especially in Lagos State. Indeed, this laudable initiative of celebrating our leaders of tomorrow is highly commendable for its derivable opportunities and how it aids the pursuit of academic excellence of young students,” Mrs Adefisayo said.
However, she adds: “Much work still has to be put in by all concerned to add value to the education sector of our state and nation.”
Hakeem Popoola Fahm, the Lagos State Commissioner for Science and Technology; Dr. Oluremi Nurudeen Olaleye, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH); and Tokunbo Philip Wahab, the Special Adviser on Education to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, were some of the invited personalities.
AEI, Nigeria’s foremost education Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), designed its Scholars’ Day programme to celebrate brilliant students and promote academic excellence among secondary school students.
Along with this event, educational personalities are recognized for their excellent contributions to education in Nigeria.
