Lawyer, Afe Babalola, has said that a new Constitution is the best bet to save Nigeria.
Newsbreak.ng reports that speaking at a news conference in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Monday, the nonagenarian advised that the 1999 constitution be jettisoned, and a fresh one composed before the 2023 general elections.
“To save Nigeria from nose-diving into irretrievable bankruptcy and poverty, irreparable economic and political damage brought about by the 1999 Constitution and its beneficiaries, a new constitution is imperatively necessary before any election,” Babalola said.
“The new Constitution should also provide a body at the local, state and federal levels to screen all aspirants on the sources of their wealth and means of livelihood, criminal record which includes pending suits,” he added.
The Constitution of Nigeria is the supreme law of the country. Nigeria has had five constitutions, and the current constitution was enacted on May 29, 1999, inaugurating the Nigerian Fourth Republic.
While several persons have sent message to Muhammadu Buhari to tear down the 1999 constitution to build a great nation, the president is not yielding to their calls.
