There is every possibility that many Nigerian women are wearing waist beads just for the aesthetics and not for any strong reason(s). However, waist beads aren’t just for “aesthetic” purposes. In fact, it has other uses and underlying meanings for which women have chosen to wear them or let their baby girls wear them from a young age.
Before they became fashion accessories for women (and men too), waist beads can be traced back to their origin in ancient African communities, where women in the royal families wore them and people would use the different patterns, sizes, qualities, and lengths to differentiate their social status.
Your woman could be wearing her waist beads for one of these reasons;
Waist Training/growing the bum
Women wear waist beads to synch their waist, thereby causing them to consciously train their waistline to fit into the beads they’re wearing. These beads do not stretch so they serve as a gauge for weight gain or weight loss. According to some women, they believe wearing waist beads from a young age will help the buttocks grow and seemingly give the wearer an ‘hour glass shape’. Ghanaians believe that wearing waist beads help the waist stay slim while increasing the hips, bum and legs.
Sexual Seduction
Waist beads have a way of making a woman look sexually appealing. It draws great attention to the waist, hips, bum, thighs and legs. Before and during sex, the attention the beads bring to the aforementioned areas of the body can further accentuate the body movements of those parts of the body which in turn draw the man’s attention to these specific erogenous zones.
Fertility Boost
Due to how the beads make a woman’s waist look sexually attractive, the rate at which couples have sexual intercourse is heightened and that, in turn, will lead to pregnancy. In some cases, the beads can be laced with charms that promote fertility and at the same time, protects the fetus in the womb. Your woman might just be trying to get pregnant.
Spiritual Reasons
A number of women who wear waist beads are deeply rooted in their spiritual journeys. They strongly believe it is a good luck charm. Some believe wearing waist beads would help to spiritually cleanse their bodies, while others believe waist beads bring peace and help them to sleep well. In some cases, it is believed that waist beads help to protect the heart, spirit, body and soul.
Fashion
A lot of women do not associate any deep meaning with wearing waist beads. They just wear them because they like how they look on their waists and feel like it is a fashion statement. It can be fun picking out different colours and mix matching them to create a gradient of colours to be worn on the waist and that’s all it is to these women.
