Nigerians have taken to Twitter to react to the “coming out” by Bolu, the son of Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, as a homsexual.

Bolu had, in an Instagram post accompanied by a picture of him holding a rainbow flag and dressed in a rainbow-coloured short, on Wednesday openly declared that “Yes, I’m Gay”.

Following the announcement, Okupe went on Twitter and said he will not accept his son’s sexual orientation because homosexuality is contradictory to the Christian faith.

He described the situation as a “spiritual challenge” and prayed that God will help him intervene and reverse his son’s decision.

However, a good number of Twitter users have scolded the former presidential spokesperson for publicly denouncing his son’s sexuality, with some telling him to allow his son make his decisions as he is a grown-up man and that his (Bolu) determination of his sexual orientation should be by choice.

Others mocked Okupe, saying his son’s decision is as a result of bad parenting.

Another set of commentators indicated that they will join him in prayers to help reverse the situation.

See below the reaction of Twitter users to Okupe’s response to his son’s homosexual declaration:

I feel your pains and I'm not trying to be wicked over this, but I would love this to happen to all the sons and daughters of the politicians, so that their lives will become useless, therefore the sons and daughters of the poor will take the position of leadership in Nigeria

Try not to waste valuable time dwelling on what you and the demands of the society or using God against your own son, accept and love your children unconditionally, that's your duty as a father. God created your son.

— Chef ola (@foodandlens) January 22, 2021

Sir, your son can still be gay and walk with God. Instead of telling us that you do not approve of such orientation, you could use this opportunity and be the father you were not.

UNTIL A MAN KNOWS THAT HE THINKS HE KNOWS, HE KNOWS IT NOT.

Not trying to be judgemental… The result of abandoning our cultural value system in pursuit of material wealth! We're all guilty of this and I'm sure God is not an author of confusion… We need to reflect deeply on our choices in life!

— Adeal (@sadeniran) January 22, 2021

I commiserate with you sir, all he needs now is prayers for deliverance surely he would be delivered through Jesus Christ, no need for public condemnation.

— Philip (@philipvalentin2) January 22, 2021

Your son is a beautiful gift from God. “Fearfully and wonderfully made” I believe he needs his father’s unconditional love, don’t let society and religious fanatics cause confusion. We are all children of God, your child is not a crime nor an abomination. #GodAdoresYou pic.twitter.com/aOaNBbHQeU

You need to go deeper on spiritual prayer to over. It's hard to see our children moving away from God to seek evil. Don't be down yet it is the time you come hard more to God to relieve than pain

— oladiplenty (@ganoland) January 22, 2021

Your son is a homosexual!
Stop this whole charade, you're better off as a father when you accept him for who he is.

Do the honorable thing! Even God will be proud

Use this as a tool to fight for the repeal of SSMPA, gay people like ur son are criminalized for just who they love

— HRH King Onwe 🏳️‍🌈 (@officialONWE) January 22, 2021

Sir,this is temptation of d Devil, pls don't fall for it.continue ur fatherly love for him in short increase d love and always feed him with powerful word of God (bible quotations) and prayers ignore what negative pple may say about u.stay healthy and unshaken.ijn

— Gbubemini (@Gbubemini) January 21, 2021

I will keep you in my prayers. We've seen gay people become straight. There's nothing God cannot do. But while you're at it, don't condemn or victimise him as this could send him further away. God's speed.

— bisuclef (@bisuclef) January 22, 2021

Whether he's born in the same year christ was baptized or given the same name as Jesus it doesn't change his declaration and lifestyle. I think that as a father, you should work hard to change this narrative even though he's grown. He's still your son guide him.

— Franck MI. (@Franck_121) January 22, 2021

Sir nothing is wrong with your son. Look beyond his sexuality and embrace him.I'm sure he has more to offer than his sexual orientation. I know it is not easy as a parent but it is what it is just move on and acpt him. Dont allow all this sociopath on SM to ridicule him they are

— Eluku ti o common (@lukuenzy) January 22, 2021

That's d sad thing with d children of d rich, dey over indulge their children, no discipline at all, result of bad parenting, that's why his brain can switch to being gay, ko ni problem ton ro, at d snap of his finger ego will hit his acct hmm d rich also cry

— O'femiBibi (@Omobola32) January 22, 2021

We thank God it is your son that is into that filthy practice called gay. Supposed it was somebody else's son, let's say a political opponent's, you would be in vanguard of smearing the person with it and quoting all sort of Bible verses for the person.

— MR JB (@bio_jibril) January 22, 2021

You gave your life to christ and still went on to loot Nigeria. God go punish hypocrites. You think you can train your children with ill gotten wealth and they wont turnout like this? This is just the begging. If you have a female child, she will act porn.

— AYO (@Easmaeel_) January 22, 2021

Is the boy in Nigeria or abroad? This is what happens when they travel to learn all manner of things when there is alot to learn at home. From seeking for better education abroad to embracing this. Bolu, it's well with you.

— Damilola Ayodele (@Damoche1) January 22, 2021

Some people will defend gay to heaven but would they be sincerly happy to have one as a child?
What an irony your son took his eyes off those big boobs and bums and those curvy shapes of ladies and decided to go for muscles and bones like himself, #whatalife!

— O'femiBibi (@Omobola32) January 22, 2021

Vanity upon vanity, many have left their responsibility and pursue wealth, the consequences is our society becoming abnormal. Return to God sir Doyin, return to being a normal father to your children for you will be judged on your role towards your children.

— benstowe stephen (@luversworth) January 22, 2021

That's why God made him GAY…because G. A. Y. God Adores You, so deal with it, he's gay and gay he will be forever and forever is a very long time!

Proud on your coming out @Bolu

— Nell Thompson (@LeyonNell) January 22, 2021

Train up a child in the way of the Lord, when he grows up he will not depart from it. Parent failure, an injury to the society

— Ojuju (@lagbajabambam) January 22, 2021

I sympathize with you but it's one hard truth to swallow. I wonder what runs in d mentality of some twisted youth. Of all things..gay? So absurd as an African where culture is upheld above all . Even d Bible he claims he reads detest sodomy. I feel your pain. Is d boy in Nigeria?
