Former Deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu, has commended alumni associations of various schools across Nigeria for taking up the responsibility of improving infrastructure in their various alma mater.
Commending the input of the union in various institutions in a tweet on Friday, Moghalu emphasized the need for improved government investment in the country’s education sector.
“I am so proud of Nigerian secondary school and university alumni associations that are stepping up to the plate, fundraising, and supporting their old schools to improve them to better standards of infrastructure. Government College Umuahia @GCUOBA my alma mater took over our,” he said.
“School from Abia State Government, established a trust which now owns the school, and completely rebuilt it. I’m so proud of our great old boys. The College of Immaculate Conception (CIC) alumni have also done extremely well in their school improvement, as have the University of Ibadan. But Nigerian governments still need to invest much more in education, especially on teacher training and curriculum reform. Education should not be less than 20% of any national or state budget. The regulation of education (school inspections) needs radical improvement,” Moghalu added.
His remark coincides with a protracted nationwide strike by university lecturers over the government’s inadequate support for public universities.
Recall that in 2022, the Academic Staff Union of Universities began a strike that shut down public universities for roughly eight months.
