The Anambra State Police Command has said Professor Chukwuma Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), who was attacked at a rally in the state on Wednesday is safe.
Monday Kuryas, the Anambra Commissioner of Police, said this in an interview on Thursday.
Unknown gunmen had on Wednesday attacked a rally organised by Soludo held at his home town in Isiofia in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State ahead of the state’s governorship election, for which he is an aspirant.
Three police officers providing security for him were killed in the attack.
The police commissioner said although Soludo is safe, Emeka Ezenwanne, the state Commissioner for Public Utilities, was abducted by the gunmen.
”The former CBN governor was holding a town hall meeting with the youths of his community called Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
“Suddenly, unknown gunmen attacked my men that were providing security for him. In the exchange of fire, three of my men were killed but the professor is safe.
“However, the Commissioner for Public Utilities, Engr Emeka Ezenwanne, was abducted in the process and my men are on the heels of the abductors,” Kuryas said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
Kuryas said he has since visited the ex-CBN governor and “reassured the professor of the security around him”.
The commissioner also disclosed that said a suspect has been arrested by the police in connection with the attack.
Soludo, of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is a frontline aspirant in the November 6 governorship poll in the state.
