Maimala Buni, Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the visit to a former president, Goodluck Jonathan, on his birthday by governors elected on the party’s platform has nothing to do with the party’s candidacy for the 2023 Presidential election.
He said this in an interview on Wednesday in response to speculations surrounding the visit of the APC governors to the former president.
Kingsley Chinda, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus leader in the House of Representatives, alleged that the visit is a move by the APC to field Jonathan in the 2023 presidential election and to disorganize the PDP,
But Buni, who is also the Governor of Yobe State, said the visit had no political inclination whatsoever.
“I know people will judge based on our visit to Jonathan when he celebrated his birthday but that is just a visit to him as a former president, it has no political inclinations,” Buni said on BBC Hausa Service.
“He is a former president and an elder statesman who is respected by many people in the country.
“Did Jonathan declare interest to contest for President?
“In politics, we do visit each other either for celebration or to sympathize depending on what happened to anyone among us.
According to the governor, their visit to Jonathan was to give respect to a former president and a statesman.
“When we are talking of peaceful coexistence, we must give respect to former President Jonathan on the issue of peace.
“How he accepted defeat in 2015 and resigned to fate.
“That has qualified him to be a statesman and he is now among our fathers,” he said.
