Efforts by All Progressives Congress state party leaders to end the stalemate in picking a speaker for the 8th Lagos state Assembly has spurred another round of controversy. Aggrieved legislators Wednesday protested the alleged imposition of Mudasir Obasa as the generally acceptable candidate for the post. The disagreement was also said to have stopped Obasa from being inaugurated as speaker. The protesters included the frontline contestants, among them, Wasiu Eshinlokun, Funmilayo Tejuosho, and other legislators from Lagos Island and Lagos Central constituencies. It is believed Obasa, who represents Agege constituency, is backed by Adebayo Oshinowo and other ranking legislators. Oshinowo, a reported Man Friday of APC national leader, Bola Tinubu, wields huge influence in the assembly and has been returned for the fourth legislative dispensation since 1999.
A legislator told Nigeria Newsbreak that Oshinowo, nicknamed ‘pepper’, has over the years created a well-oiled political machinery that enables him corruptly manipulate house members and the assembly for personal advantage and his clique. He has been able to sustain his larger-than-life image in the assembly due to his closeness to Tinubu, the legislator adds.
