The Presidency has disassociated President Muhammadu Buhari from mediating in the current political crisis in Edo State, saying that the task of conciliation lies with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Presidency’s position was stated by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President in Media and Publicity, in an interview on Sunday in reaction to the latest face-off between Godwin Obaseki, Governor of Edo State; and his predecessor and APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

The latest feud between the duo was ignited on Saturday after persons suspected to be hoodlums attacked Governor Obaseki, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos; and Aderemi Makanjuola, the Chancellor of the Edo University, at Iyamho, the hometown of Oshiomhole in Edo State.

The attacked trio was said to be heading to the former Edo governor’s home to honour a lunch invitation when they were suddenly ambushed, but eventually escaped without sustaining any injury.

Oshiomhole had blamed Philip Shaibu, the state’s Deputy Governor, for the incident but the latter denied the allegation.

Providing the Presidency’s reaction to the attack, Shehu said the issue is an internal party matter and urged all parties concerned to channel their disagreements to the APC.

“Let them go and talk to the party,” Shehu said in a tense response to an inquiry made by the Punch.

Asked whether it was pertinent for President Buhari to personally intervene, Shehu declined to further speak on the matter.

Governor Obaseki and Oshiomhole have reportedly been at loggerheads over the latter’s proclamation of the Edo Assembly and the election of Frank Oyiye as the Speaker of the House.
