The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON)has warned that it will take disciplinary action against skit makers, bloggers, and social media influencers who breach the Nigerian Code of Advertising Practices.
In a statement made available to Newsbreak Nigeria on Monday, ARCON said that it would sanction and prosecute anybody who violates the act’s provisions.
The warning comes in response to many complaints received by the regulatory agency over the activities of skit makers, bloggers, influencers and other digital content creators.
ARCON stated that the majority of commercials made by this category of people are deceptive and unethical, with unproven claims. The regulating organization also stated that their contents violate the Nigerian Code of Advertising Practices.
“The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has received complaints on the advertisement, advertising, and marketing communications activities of skit makers, comedians, influencers, content creators /producers, bloggers, vloggers, etc on digital /online media platforms. Most of the advertisements exposed by this group are not only unethical with unverified claims and misinformation but also in violation of the Nigerian Code of Advertising Practice,” the statement read.
The agency further asked advertising stakeholders in the digital media space to “obtain pre-exposure approval of all advertisements, advertising and marketing communication in accordance with the Nigerian Code of Advertising Practice and the ARCON Act No.23 of 2022.”
