Asa, a veteran Nigerian singer, has sued fast-rising singer Joeboy for $300 million in damages for copyright infringement.
The news comes two months after music producer Tempoe removed the most streamed song from Asa’s latest album, ‘V,’ due to copyright issues.
The news of Nigerian music producer Tempoe suing Asa and obtaining a court order for him to remove two tracks from her most recent album, “V,” broke on July 25, 2022.
The most streamed song from Asa’s album at the time, “IDG” ft. Wizkid, and “Love Me Or Give Me Red Wine” were subsequently taken down from all streaming services.
Contour, a recent release from Joeboy Boy, is likely to suffer the same fate as Asa’s songs, which were recently removed from all streaming services.
Asa on October 2 served Joeboy with a notice alleging that the song’s beat was created by her during a recording session with Tempoe on September 22, 2020.
“We hereby demand that you immediately remove the song from all DSPs and any other platforms within twenty-four 24 hours of your recipients of this letter, with a written apology issued to our client as well as halt any other infringements of our composition, including any other infringements,” a notice from Asa attorney to Joeboy read in part.
Shedding more light on the dispute, music blogger Joey Akan wrote: “Asa is suing Joeboy for a beat Tempoe worked on for her but she reportedly didn’t use or pay for it, but Joeboy did. Tempoe got his injunction and brought down her music. Let’s see if she gets hers too,” a tweet by Joey Akan read.
Joeboy stands to lose N300 million as settlement and give Asa a 60% publishing split on the song if an injunction is granted. Additionally, she wanted an apology in writing, which Joeboy refused to do.
Reacting to the development via his Instagram story, Joeboy tagged the legendary singer a bluff daring her to take action.
“You said I have 24 hours, it’s been 48 hours, do something,” he said.
