The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been ordered to end its strike by the Appeal Court in Abuja.
The appellate court ruled on Friday that ASUU should obey the order of an industrial court ordering the suspension of the strike before filing an appeal.
Since February 14, ASUU has been on strike to raise awareness of its demands, which include increased funding for universities and a review of lecturers’ pay among other things.
The federal government approached the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NCIN) to contest the action after several attempts to end the strike ended in failure.
In a decision issued on September 21, the industrial court granted the federal government’s request for an interlocutory injunction to stop ASUU from continuing the strike while the merits of the substantive lawsuit are being resolved.
ASUU requested permission to appeal the lower court’s decision after being dissatisfied with the ruling and approaching the court of appeal.
On Wednesday, the court of appeal ordered the parties to look into the possibility of a settlement outside of court. But it failed.
