Atletico Madrid have ended Barcelona’s hopes of defending their Champions League title win. Two goals from Antoine Griezmann were enough to leave a sad atmosphere in the Barcelona camp. Heading into stoppage time and searching for the goal that would have forced an extra 30 minutes, Barca were incensed not to receive a penalty when Andres Iniesta’s shot struck the arm of Atletico captain Gabi just inside the box, with the referee instead awarding a free-kick which Lionel Messi sent into the stands.
Barcelona had been leading 2-1 from the first leg but had not been able to cope with Atletico’s intensity at the Vincente Calderon. The loss means that the team has lost two games in a row without scoring a goal. They lost 1-0 to Real Sociedad on Saturday and have now lost to Atletico Madrid, who hindered their La Liga dreams on the final day of the 2013-14 season. Again, this season, Barcelona are just three points ahead of the Diego Simeone-tutored side on the league standings.
