A baby dumped by the roadside in the densely populated Abule Egba, in Lagos, died hours before he could be helped. Shell-shocked traders resumed in the morning to find the infant wrapped with a black and his mouth plastered. They suspected the gagged baby belonged to a pregnant lunatic who used to stray around the area. The sudden disappearance of the said lunatic during her advanced pregnancy fuelled speculation she might have returned to abandon the baby after delivery.
Fear of being implicated prevented the traders and passers-by from helping the baby. At about 11 a.m the baby was still breathing, the traders said. The infant attracted a crowd of on-lookers, some of whom took his picture. By the time state government officials arrived at about 5 p.m, the baby was found dead.
