Olaoluwa Adejo, a banker, has been accused of torturing his wife of five years, Maureen, to death at their residence on Peluola Street in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos State. The 32-year-old man was said to have whipped her with a leather belt, inflicted machete cuts on her legs and hands before forcing her to drink otapiapia, a local insecticide.
The deceased’s mother, Kate Jonathan, told Punch Metro that she had received a call from an unknown number on Sunday, November 12, 2017 informing her of her daughter’s death. She said the couple had been living peacefully until the deceased had told them Adejo said they would see her obituary very soon. She said she had instructed her to leave the house immediately. She, however, returned when her children were having their cultural day at school. She had attended the programme with her husband.. It was that day she was killed at their residence.
She said she had reported the matter at the Oworonshoki police station, where she was told that Adejo had made a report that his wife committed suicide. It was also discovered that he had deposited the remains at the Gbagada General Hospital mortuary and had been preparing court papers to enable him bury her. He was arrested when he was directed to get some documents from the police station where he had reported the incident.
Giving an account of how the incident happened, the couple’s five-year-old son, Richard, said: “My daddy beat my mummy with a belt; machete her here (shows arms), machete her here (shows legs). He used the belt on her here (points at face); forced my mummy to drink otapiapia (insecticide). My daddy took my mummy away.
“My daddy said my mummy should get out of the house. My mummy said no. In the night, my daddy woke my mummy up and said, ‘Mosquito is too much, let me go and buy otapiapia’. My daddy forced my mummy to drink it. She shook her head. She vomited.
“My daddy slapped my mummy. My mummy did not do anything to him. My daddy gave her one blow. My daddy kicked her. My daddy told her to get out of the house and carry her load. Small blood came out. My daddy slapped her, kicked her, machete her, blow her, and put otapiapia in her mouth and in the food.”
The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba. The couple’s three children were said to have been taken to a family friend, a policeman, who lives in Agric, in the Ikorodu area.
Chike Oti, the Police Public Relations Officer, said investigations are ongoing.
