Anene Sewuese Catherine, the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Benue State Police Command on Wednesday said contrary to widespread claim, it recovered crushed papers in sacks — not naira notes.

Newsbreak.ng reports that a trending video showed sacks of perceived old naira notes discovered inside a big container around Wadata market in Makurdi on Tuesday.

But the police’s mouthpiece in Benue State said when its personnel got to Wadata market, it was discovered that they were “crushed papers”.

“Benue Police Command recovers crushed papers in Sacks not naira notes,” Catherine wrote on her known Twitter handle.

She added: “These wasted papers were usually gotten from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and processed in mosquito repellents.

“Investigation has been extended to the CBN for confirmation.”
