Boko Haram insurgents have over the years killed 350 school teachers, destroyed 512 schools and over 1,000 classrooms in Borno state, Shettmima Bukarkullima, chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) said. He however did not provide figures for slain school kids during the same period. Also, the SUBEB official mentioned government efforts at re-building damaged schools and replace educational learning materials in places not occupied by the terrorists. “In some peaceful areas, particularly Maidugri, Jere, Shani, Hawul, Bayo, Kwayo Kusar, schools are still in session. Within Maidugri and IDPs’ camps, schools are also functioning. The state government is aggressively pursuing the construction of schools. Apart from the state government, we are yet to get support from anywhere, particularly from the previous government. We are worse than a conquered territory.
“We got all the books that are being distributed but you know that most of the areas were vandalised by insurgents,” he stated.
