Reports coming in indicate that a former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Newsbreak reports.
In a letter addressed to his Ward Chairman in Agulu, the 2023 presidential aspirant informed the party leader of his decision to officially exit Nigeria’s main opposition party.
It is not yet clear if Obi will run for the position of president via another platform.
In 2019, Obi was running-mate to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. The duo lost to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
Obi has a solid supportership on social media, and has won several online polls in recent months. Many of his supporters are young Nigerians who said they believe in his capacity.
Despite the withdrawal of Obi, the southeast region still has presidential aspirants as Dave Umahi (All Progressives Congress, APC), Anyim Pius (PDP), Rochas Okorocha (APC), among others.
There has been a clamour for power to shift to the southeast region in 2023.
