Newsbreak reports that the Federal Government on Thursday reversed its decision to suspend Nigeria’s basketball teams from all international competitions.
Ismaila Abubakar, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja this morning.
According to him, the latest decision is based on a letter of appeal from the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), signed by President Musa Kida.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had in May approved the immediate withdrawal of Nigeria from all international basketball competitions for a period of two years with immediate effect.
During that time, the world basketball governing body, FIBA, withdrew Nigeria from the women’s basketball World Cup scheduled to be held in September in Sydney, Australia.
The basketball sport has been engulfed in leadership crisis in the last five years.
Two parallel national federation board elections were held in 2017 (in Kano and Abuja) and 2022 (in Benin and Abuja), leading to the emergence of separate governing bodies.
