Mbazulike Amaechi (also written as Amechi), an elder statesman who served as the first Minister of Aviation during the First Republic in Nigeria, is dead.
Newsbreak.ng learnt that Amaechi died on Tuesday morning aged 93.
An official statement released this morning (Tuesday) by the family signed by Ezeana Tagbo Amechi confirmed the nonagenarian’s demise.
Chief Amechi, an indigene of Amihe village in Ukpor, Nnewi South Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State, was the only surviving member of the Zikist Movement.
“With total deference to the will of the Almighty God, the Ume Amechi, Ezeana Ihinede families and the Umu Mmara kindred of Amihe Ukpor in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State announce the peaceful transition of our illustrious son, father and grandfather, Chief Mbazulike Amechi (Dara Akunwafor), Nationalist and First Republic Minister of Aviation of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who transitioned peacefully in the early hours of today November 1, 2022,” the statement partly reads.
Amechi’s last major public outing was leading the delegation of some Igbo leaders who visited President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Rock, Abuja, in November 2021 to plead for the release of the detained leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
He had pleaded with the president to sanction the release of the separatist leader during his lifetime.
