A truck has been reportedly crushed some secondary school students to death around Grammar School, Busstop, Ojodu Berger, Lagos State.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the students were heading home during the closing hour.
The truck was reportedly had a brake failure as the driver struggled to halt the moving truck and subsequently crushed the students just near the premises of their school.
Speaking to Newsbreak on the incident, an eyewitness, identified simply as Taiwo, said the truck was moving from the Berger axis of Lagos and the driver was being pursued by officers of the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS).
Upon the truck’s arrival at Grammar School, the driver, according to Taiwo, failed to slow down while at full speed and lost balance, which then led to him ramming the truck at the children, who had closed and were on their way home.
“The trailer was coming from Berger. So, all these VIS officers were pursuing the guy, probably because he violated a particular traffic order or something. So, they were chasing him all because of the things they would get or bribe or whatever.
“So the guy had to run and he was on full speed. When he got to Grammar School, he couldn’t stop, he couldn’t slow down. He crushed over 21 students and all of them ended up dead,” an emotional Taiwo told Newsbreak.
However, as of the time of this report, the causality toll has not been officially confirmed.
The incident led to a riot as angry persons in the area set a truck on fire.
Members of the Nigeria Police Force subsequently came to the area and dispersed persons away from the scene, using tear gas.
