A piece of oil equipment conveyed on a speed boat has been destroyed by suspected militants of the Black Marine in Abana, Bakassi Peninsula, leaving the sailor and two Cameroonian Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) operatives dead.
Newsbreak.ng reports that Abana is the former headquarters of Bakassi Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River State, South-South Nigeria, which was completely ceded to Cameroon in 2008.
The Black Marine is said to be affiliated with the Biafra Nations League (BnL), a secessionist movement.
The militants launched an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack after ambushing the boat in Abana at about 11 am on Friday.
Authorities in Cameroon have beefed up security around the borders following the attack.
BnL has insisted that its men will not allow exploration of oil in the Gulf of Guinea.
