President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the dual attacks on the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) facility and the Imo Police Command Headquarters, both in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Monday.
The president also mourned the leaders of the Miyetti Allah in Nasarawa State, who were recently killed.
The president’s messages were made known in separate statements issued by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, on Monday.
According to President Buhari, the attacks on the correctional facility and the Imo police command headquarters were terrorist attacks, noting that it was an attempt to destabilise the state.
He commended the security agents deployed to the scene of the prison break out for preventing greater loss of life and the destruction of public property and called on law enforcement agencies to probe the incident and rearrest the fleeing inmates.
He also urged the public to volunteer information to law enforcement agencies probing the attacks.
The statement read: “President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the deadly insurgent attack that took place on the Police Command Headquarters and the Correctional Facility in Owerri, Imo State, on Monday, calling it an act of terrorism.
“In his reaction to the incident early on Monday, President Buhari praised the initial response by security guards and security forces for preventing greater loss of life and the destruction of public property.
“The President directed security and intelligence agencies in the state and the geo-political zone to fully mobilize and go after the terrorists, apprehend them and get them punished under the full weight of the law. He also called for the best efforts to be made to rearrest fleeing prison detainees, many of whom are believed to be deadly criminals.
“President Buhari then appealed to members of the public to assist the law enforcement agencies with any relevant information that could lead to the apprehension of these criminals who perpetrated this despicable act.”
In a separate statement, President Buhari expressed sadness over the death of Mohammed Husaini, the Nasarawa Miyetti Allah leader, and other members of the apex herdsmen group.
The president called on the Fulani leaders in the state to choose new leaders that will build on the foundation of peace laid by their slain leaders.
He added that his administration will work with all members of the society to rid the country of terrorists, bandits and kidnappers.
The statement read: “President Muhammadu Buhari condoles with the government and people of Nasarawa State over the brutal killing of the leaders of the Miyetti Allah who forged a strategic partnership with the government against the menace of bandits and kidnappers.
“The President described the late state leader, Alhaji Mohammed Husaini who was among those murdered as a beacon of peace for Nasarawa State and the subregion.
“In praying for the repose of the souls of those killed, President Buhari urged the Fulani leaders in the state to choose new leaders who will build on the foundations of peace set up by the Husaini-led leadership.
“The President reiterated the determination of his administration to work with all members of the society to rid the country of terrorists, bandits and kidnappers.”
