The President and Chairman of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, Engr. Kashim Ali, has said the rate of collapse building in the country is alarming and erring engineering firms would be sanctioned in accordance with its Code of Ethics.
In a statement, Ali said this is following the report given by the Regulation and Control Committee of COREN noted the
alarming rate of building collapse in Nigeria resulting in the loss of lives and property.
In another development, the council considered the report of the Universities accreditation visitation to the Engineering programmes of Nigerian Universities in the third quarter of 2016 where 10 programmes were visited in four Universities across the country. Six programmes got full accreditation while four programmes got interim accreditation.
The Council noted that the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka graduated five sets of students numbering 142 between 2010 and 2015 in two undergraduate programmes namely Agric and Bioresource Engineering and Polymer and Textile Engineering which had not been accredited by COREN.
Ali said the council therefore resolved that in line with COREN Act, the products of such programmes will never be registered and therefore cannot practise Engineering in Nigeria or any part of the world but however granted the two programmes interim accreditation for a period of two years with effect from 9th September, 2016.
The council also approved the registration of 10 Engineering Consulting Firms, 1,626 Engineers, 77 Technologists, 40 Engineering Technicians and 21 Engineering Craftsmen whose capabilities have been adequately tested and found worthy of COREN registration.
