Burkina Faso’s military have declared that they now control the country. The declaration was made following Wednesday’s arrest of the interim president, Michel Kafando, and Prime Minister, Lt. Col. Isaac Zida. The military had sent shock waves through the country when the coup was announced on radio and television on Thursday. According to the statement released and read by Lt. Col Mamadou Bamba, the military had criticised the ousted interim president for blocking members of the ex-president’s party from taking part in the elections which was to hold on October 11, before the coup took over. Bamba assured the country that the coup was the beginning of a “coherent, fair and equitable process” that would lead to inclusive elections. (Associated Press)
