An ally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has said that calls by the team of the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, for the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, has been jettisoned by “an overwhelming majority of the party.”
Newsbreak.ng reports that the call for Ayu’s resignation is on the grounds that the national chairman and the presidential candidate cannot be from the same region (North).
But Ayu has refused to step down, while Atiku, who is being pressurised to persuade the former to resign, is reluctant to do so.
“Let me tell you the honest truth. As far as the Wike matter is concerned there is an overwhelming sentiment that the campaign has moved on.
“So, if Wike or anyone in his camp shows the readiness of coming in, they will be accommodated. But nobody is waiting for them again because they are not important enough to hurt the process.
“That is the honest, overwhelming impression,” Vanguard quotes the source as saying.
The PDP today (Monday) flagged off its presidential campaign in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The presidential campaign is holding at the Nest of Champions Stadium, Uyo.
