Catholics in Mexico mark Holy Saturday with a tradition during which participants whip each other with the aim of ending old quarrels while remembering Christ’s suffering.

Devout men and women took to the streets on Easter Sunday and were whipping each other in a twist on tradition.

Usually the hardcore Catholic faithful parade through the streets flagellating themselves as an act of penitence as sinners and to mark the suffering of Christ.

But some in Mexico appear to have gone a stage further and started whipping one another instead.

Men in the Mexican town of Soltepec took to the streets on Saturday in a tradition that is supposed to cleanse the body of sin during Holy Week.

The tradition is believed to date back to the 16th century.
