The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has warned Nigerians against abusing the nation’s legal tender, the naira, at social events.
It is a common thing in the country to see people spray the naira on celebrants and performers at occasions such as weddings, birthdays and funerals.
Aladeen Badajo, Assistant Director, Currency Operations, at the apex bank, has urged Nigerians to desist from “mutilating, defacing, squeezing, spraying and selling” naira notes, saying anyone caught will be arrested and sent to jail.
Badajo said this during the commencement of the CBN two-day sensitisation fair which held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Thursday.
He stressed that, “abuse of the currency attracts a penalty of not less than six months or a fine of not less than N50,000 or both.”
But it is not the first time the CBN would threaten to arrest and prosecute Nigerians found abusing the naira.
