The 1st Chief Theodore Adebiyi Squash Tournament came to an end over the weekend in Ibadan, Oyo State capital with high ratings.

Newsbreak.ng reports that Adekunle Adebiyi Sport Foundation, organizers of the tournament, has been promoting squash and racket sports for roughly seven years in Nigeria’s southwest region.

All the nationally-ranked players from the four categories starred in the maiden championship; six states, two academies were represented, 67 players competed, and 108 matches were played.

Mistura Durosinlorun emerged as double champion at the four-day event which held at the Ibadan Recreation Centre, defeating her opponents in both the under-16 and under-19 divisions.

Durosinlorun, who started playing squash aged 8, is currently Nigeria’s top-ranked U-16 player.

The maiden edition of the Chief Theodore Idowu Adebiyi national age-grade squash championship featured the best squash-playing athletes in the country; the likes of Jadesola Olatunji, Durosinlorun, Samuel Nduka-Uba, Muhammad Soliu, Promise James, et al.

Speaking to this reporter following the conclusion of the tournament, Yusuf Durosinlorun, the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Squash Federation (NSF), said the tourney was put together to develop squash, especially at the grassroots level.

In a similar vein, Oluwaseun Peters, the Tournament Director (TD) of the Theodore Adebiyi competition, said the level of competitiveness among the budding talents was ‘very high and encouraging’.

“The playing hostilities among the players were very tough and encouraging,” Peters said.

“Normally in most junior tournaments, tough games start from Round-of-16 or mostly quarterfinals. However, the toughness of the matches started from the first round, which made some matches appear as ‘final-before-final’.

“There were a lot of close point-winning moments, especially in the boys’ category. So the level of competitiveness was very high.”

Top performers in the tournament were rewarded with squash items in order to make it friendlier for them to play the sport.
