Olusegun Ogungbemide, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Lagos State, has lamented the insults directed at officials of the corps by Nigerians.

Ogungbemide, who spoke on Sunday during a visit to Living Faith Church, Ikorodu, for sensitisation on road safety, said Christians and even pastors refer to FRSC officials as “idiots” and “animals” for doing their jobs.

He urged the congregants to observe road safety signs and stay alive, adding that God is not pleased when the life of a believer is cut short in a road accident.

He noted that Christians die in road accidents not because they are sinners, but for lack of knowledge.

“God is never be happy when his child dies in road accident. But one thing that has been cut short is your life and your vision on earth and that is not the will of God for you. I’m here to tell you this morning that all we need to change in the midst of all these dangers is our attitude.

“Many of us as Christians don’t have respect for the law. Jesus told his disciples when he was confronted about tax. He said give unto Caesar what is Caesar. And the law says every person in authority i’ve put them there for you. Respect them. I can’t tell you the amount of insults I have received in my 37 years on this job.

“And the insults not from other religion alone. Even Christians, Men of God, brothers and sisters, they will say ‘they are animals, idiots’, all in the name of doing what you asked us to and do”, he said.

Ogungbemide further warned the congregants to be wary of other drivers on the roads, saying a lot of motorists are psychologically absent behind the wheel because of the economic hardship in the country.

“There are a lot of ‘enemies’ on the road while driving. There is what we call driving distance. It should be 16 metres between you and the vehicle in front of you. Enemy number two is the one coming from the rear. He could be on speed. It could be an articulated vehicle. Use your side mirror. Step aside and allow that vehicle to pass.

“Your enemy number three is the one that is coming from the other side. He could be distracted. There could be a tyre burst. It’s not everyone behind the steering that is seeing you. Some are gone psychologically. There is serious economic problem in town. People are just moving, they are not there,” he warned
