A 45-year-old man has died after his own cock slashed him with a knife attached to its leg during a cockfight in India.

The rooster, with a 3-inch knife tied to its leg, was said to have jumped up in panic and slashed its owner, Thangulla Satish, in his groin, in an apparent attempt to escape, police inspector, B. Jeevan, said.
“The knife pierced him in the groin region,” local police told the Times of India.
“It was a severe injury and he lost a lot of blood.
The incident occurred in Lothunur village in the southern state of Telangana.

Police said they are looking for more than a dozen people involved in the illegal event, which took place on February 22.
The cock has been taken to a poultry farm for “protection”, before being presented in a court as evidence of the cause of death, police told local media.

Cockfighting was banned in India in 1960, but the practice has continued in many states.
Cockfights are often associated with Hindu festivals.
