Four persons have been feared dead following the collapse of a 21-storey building under construction in Lagos State on Monday.
The building, which was located at Gerrad Road in the Ikoyi axis of Lagos State, collapsed around 2pm and had scores of persons trapped in the subsequent rubble, including the owner of the building reportedly among those involved.
The cause of the incident remains unknown as of press time.
The bodies of four lifeless persons were brought out from the rubble by personnel of the emergency services, as well as volunteers on the ground, according to TVC.
According to multiple reports, four persons were also rescued and were taken to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Prowess Engineering Limited, the project consultants formerly handling the project, disassociated itself from the collapsed building and the owner in a letter seen by Newsbreak.
In a letter dated February 20, 2020, and addressed to Mr Femi Osibona, Mangaing Director of Fourscore Heights Limited, the owners of the building, the engineering consultancy firm said it was withdrawing its services from the project because of the discrepancies it had with the owner concerning the manner in which the project was being handled.
“This is to formally inform you of the withdrawal of our structural consultancy service from the above-named project. We arrived at this decision due to the fact that we no longer share same vision with you as our client in terms of how the project is being executed,” the letter, signed by Muritala Olawale, Managing Director of Prowess Engineering Limited, read.
According to the consultant, it had no access to the concrete cube test results of the building and could, therefore, not continue to supervise the project.
The consultant insisted that “we are not taking responsibilities for any other construction errors that may have occurred over time on the project”.
It called on Fourscore Heights Limited upon receipt of the letter to ensure that “our company’s name and logo be removed from the project board and also kindly notify all necessary approving authorities of our withdrawal from the project”.
