Key stakeholders in the Nigerian squash fraternity are displeased with the Ministry of Sport following the omission of the racket sport from the just-concluded Commonwealth Games 2022.
Newsbreak.ng reports that Team Nigeria competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England, where it topped the list of African teams in respect of medals won.
It was the country’s 15th appearance at the Games. Nigeria participated in nine sports, namely athletics, wrestling, boxing, karate, table tennis, weightlifting, para-athletics, para-powerlifting, and para-table tennis.
Nigeria is the best squash-playing country in West Africa, and the absence of the country’s athletes did not sit well with squash enthusiasts, especially as neighbouring Ghana presented squash athletes.
This news medium gathered that the Ministry of Sports only approved travel for sports that had won medals in the past at previous Commonwealth, hence the exclusion of squash.
Still, the squash stakeholders are angry the Ministry of Sports — headed by Sunday Dare — deemed some sports not medal-winning. They feel it is not good for the development of sports in the country.
In fact, Newsbreak.ng can authoritatively report that a move is being mooted by squash stakeholders to petition the Ministry of Sports to express their displeasure in respect of the Commonwealth games.
