A community head in the Ikorodu area of Lagos has beaten a resident to coma for failing to greet him. The Baale of Odumade/Solumade Phase 2 in Igbogbo/Bayeku, Ikorodu, Safarudeen Odumade was aid to have beaten the truck pusher, Abdullahi Mohammed, for failing to greet him as he passed by his residence. Mohammed was said to have ignored Odumade when he had called him to demand an explanation for not saluting him as culture demands. The Baale and his younger brother,who was also said to have joined in the beating, fled the scene when Mohammed fell into coma.
A resident of the area, Bisi Odunuga, said the incident had almost caused violence in the area as the victim’s friends had mobilised and were chanting solidarity songs. They had marched to the Baale’s house threatening mayhem. The situation was contained by a policeman who was repairing his car on the road as he ordered that the injured be taken to the hospital. Another stir was caused when rumours of Mohammed’s death filtered into the community. His friends had again mobilised and this time with weapons threatening an ethnic battle. Normalcy was restored to the area by policemen of the Igogbo Police Division who ensured the area remained peaceful. It was later found out that Mohammed was alive.
Residents are said to still be panicking as the Baale is yet to be found. Surveillance in the area have since been heightened in bid to capture the him.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, confirmed the incident and said the police are still on the trail of the suspect.
