The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has shut a Chinese store operating in Abuja for illegally selling frogs, snakes and other sea foods.

The store, Panda Supermarket in Jabi, has an area restricted to only Asian nationals, where the illegal foods are sold.
Babatunde Irukera, the commission’s Chief Executive, said the action is necessary to prevent the spread of the deadly virus to the country. He lamented that the foods were sold without packaging, raising serious concerns for safety, adding that the discrimination against Nigerians would not be entertained.

“Selling frozen imported seafood, other animals like frogs & snakes under suspicious conditions with no packaging raises serious concerns, especially when origin is China cos [sic] of coronavirus.
“Discriminating against Nigerian nationals in access to displays is also wrong so we acted,” he wrote on Twitter.
Also discovered in the store are food with expiry dates such as 2089, 2037, 2018 and 2019.
