An Upper Area Court in Jos on Monday sentenced a 35-year old trader, Musa Mohammed, to a year in prison for stealing two bottles of vegetable oil from a provision shop.
The judge, David Damulak, sentenced Mohammed after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Damulak, however, gave the convict an option of N20, 000 fine or 12 months in prison.
The judge said the judgment would serve as deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such criminal act.
.
Earlier, the Counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on Dec. 6 at Laranto Police station by one Esther Ere, the complainant.
The prosecutor said that the convict went into the woman’s provision shop, pretending to buy some provisions and stole the items.
He said the vegetable oil valued at N10, 000 for the two bottles were recovered from the convict and given back to the shop owner.
The offence, he said, was punishable under the provisions of Plateau Penal Code
