Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday convicted and sentenced one Oyesanmi Olatunbosun Shola to two years imprisonment for Impersonation.
Shola was arraigned by the Benin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a one-count charge bordering on impersonation and attempting to obtain information by false pretence.
The charge against him reads: “That you Oyesanmi Olatunbosun Shola (aka Hannah Brooks) sometimes in 2020 in Owo, Ondo State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fraudulently impersonate the identity of Hannah Brook a British Actress by fraudulently sending documents to Christian Johnson through the internet which documents you claim emanated from the said Hannah Brook with the intent to gain advantage for yourself you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 22(2)(b)(i) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition Prevention, Etc) Act 2015 and punishable under Section 22(2)(b)(iv) of the same Act.”
The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read.
In view of his plea, the prosecution counsel, Immaculate Elodi prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendant in accordance with the plea bargain agreement between the parties.
Justice Shuaibu convicted and sentenced the defendant to two years imprisonment or a fine of N200,000. The convict is also to forfeit his iPhone 12 Pro to the Federal government of Nigeria.
He is equally to undertake in writing to be of good behaviour afterwards.
In a related development, Justice Efe Ikponwonba of the Edo State High Court sitting in Benin City also convicted and sentenced Stanley Edonogie to three years imprisonment or a fine of N500, 000 for personation.
The defendant on arraignment pleaded guilty to the charge, prompting the judge to convict and sentence him in accordance with the plea bargain agreement between the parties.
The defendant was said to have presented himself as Victory Julius, Raymond Wilson (Americans) on Facebook in his attempt to defraud unsuspecting victims.
